PRESENTATION
Resiliency, Self Advocacy & Learning: What is the Therapist Role?

Karen Grites, M.S.
Our speaker for our March luncheon is uniquely qualified to help us answer this question. She has worked in the field of special education for over 35 years as a teacher and educational diagnostician. Karen Grites, M.S. is passionate about what she has learned of resiliency through her work with children and wants to share this knowledge with those who can make a difference. Currently she is the Center for Community Education Director for the Children's Health Council (CHC) in Palo Alto. Her personal focus is on training parents, teachers and therapists to help foster resiliency in our youth via intervention when a child is struggling.
Many of us have had referrals for children with poor self-image who are struggling in school. These issues often lead to self defeating behaviors. Families may also need help to support their children. Karen advocates that when learning styles are demystified and children can articulate how their brain works and how they learn best, they gain a sense of power and create the groundwork for a better self-image, resulting in greater success.
